The program offers a comprehensive array of services designed to assist the individual Marine achieve improved PFT performance, weight loss, injury prevention, improved sports performance, and injury reconditioning. The services include Health Related and Sports Related Fitness Assessments, Individual & Comprehensive Fitness Component Training Program Prescriptions, and Nutritional Counseling.
Nutrition and Weight Management Class
A two-hour class covering portions, caloric intake and counts, food preparation, and making healthy choices. Available at Henderson Hall or off-site.Nutrition Counseling
Complete one-on-one nutritional assessment. Program includes keeping a one-week food log, lipid and blood sugar screenings, resting metabolic rate testing, body composition, vital signs, and more. Clients will receive goal setting recommendations and resource materials as well as monthly follow-up appointments for four months.Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
Testing This is an excellent opportunity to find out how many calories your body burns while at rest and calculating your individual Basal Metabolic Rate. Takes approximately 30 minutes.Hypertension Education
Take a two-hour class and learn how prevent, manage, and recover from the effects of hypertension, “the silent killer.” Topics include hypertension causes and symptoms, and preventing and managing hypertension with nutrition and exercise.Stress Awareness
Discover the common causes of stress and how to recognize and react to them before they become unmanageable and lead to illness or disease. Individual coping skills will be discussed and reviewed. Classes scheduled upon request.Anger Awareness
Discover the common triggers for expressing anger and how to recognize and react to them before they become unmanageable and lead to illness or disease. Individual coping skills will be discussed and reviewed. Classes scheduled upon request.These two classes are guaranteed to make you look at the stresses of your life in a different way. Each held once a week for eight weeks. Topics covered include priorities for life, unspoken expectations, trust, communication, healthy conflict resolution, personality differences, marriage and family violence, role expectations, parenting issues, substance abuse, smart money budgeting.
Tobacco Cessation and Prevention
This one-hour Tobacco Cessation Course is held once a week over four weeks. Classes are Wednesdays 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM or 4:30 – 5:30 PM. Quit aids are available.All offerings are by appointment only by calling by calling 703-614-5959 and free to active duty personnel, retirees, family members & DoD employees.

Public health and wellness services are geared toward evaluating an individual’s current health status and/or level of risk for lifestyle related diseases, and providing individuals access to educational classes that will teach them to improve their health and/or better manage their level of risk. The Fitness and Wellness professionals achieve this by offering Wellsource Personal Wellness Profiles (PWP), BSDI Health Risk Appraisals, and Health and Wellness Classes.
These services are geared toward individuals who require some special programming. Medical Exercise Services are geared toward evaluating an individual’s current health and/or injury status and providing individual exercise prescriptions to improve current health status and/or improve functional conditioning and performance. This is accomplished through Post Rehabilitation Training and Special Population Training.
Smith Gym offers total body conditioning group exercise classes Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM, and Tuesdays and Thursdays 6 - 7 AM in the racquetball courts. The classes consist of a full body workout at a tempo appropriate for all workout levels and maximum caloric expenditure.Classes incorporate weights, body bars, resistance bands, agility work, steps, stability balls, medicine balls, and more. Individuals may pace themselves under instructor guidance.
