Volunteer Program
Henderson Hall’s Volunteer Program connects, equips and engages our Marine and Civilian Marine Volunteers to foster leadership, drive and potential.
The mission of the volunteer program is to inform and to enhance the quality of military and community volunteer programs aboard Henderson Hall and beyond its gates and build a strong sense of community among the Marine Corps units within the DC Metro Area. Develop and maintain a robust portfolio of diverse volunteering opportunities to meet various goals/needs.
The volunteer program is committed to the idea that a thoughtfully planned and well managed volunteer program can bring a wealth of benefits to the Marine, their family, and the surrounding community.

A Wider Circle
A Wider's Circle's Neighbor-to-Neighbor program redistributes furniture to families that are transitioning out of homelessness and shelters. They need volunteers to pick out furniture, sort and organize donations, organize our warehouse, and/or go out on our truck with our team to pick up donations from around the region. Located in MD. Metro accessible. This is probably NOT a good activity for someone who would have trouble lifting and carrying heavy objects, or someone who has cat or dog allergies as we were going into people's homes who often had pets. Please wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.
KEEN Kids Sports MD
Get your exercise and help kids, too! Come play tennis, basketball, soccer and more with KEEN athletes ages 5-12. KEEN is a one-to-one sports organization in MD for children with disabilities. First time volunteers must attend an orientation at 11:30 am. Located in MD. Minimum age: 15. Metro accessible.
Tutor & Buddy Program – Barcroft Elementary School
The Tutor Buddy Program with Barcroft Elementary School has also been a long standing tradition, and we are excited to announce that this program is back up and running. This is a great opportunity to be a role model and to help students learn in a fun and interactive way through educational games. Volunteers are needed for the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of every month; transportation leaves from the pull-up bars at Smith Gym at Henderson Hall at 10:45 am and will return by 12:15 pm. This opportunity is open to active duty and civilians.
Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation
Help find a rescued dog a new home this weekend by volunteering as a dog handler! Your time spent on weekends helping Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation with pet adoption days will enable us to show more dogs, increasing their chances of being adopted. Located in VA. Not metro accessible. Volunteers between the ages of 14-16 must be accompanied by an adult.
SOME - Grocery Delivery for Seniors
Volunteers deliver 200 bags of pre-packed groceries to low-income seniors in SE and NE Washington, DC. YOU WILL NEED A CAR to deliver the food. Driving directions are provided. Each volunteer gets a route of 2 or 3 seniors that live in close proximity. As a “regular” volunteer, you will do the same route so you can get to know your person over time. Minimum age is 18.
The National Center for Children and Families - Greentree Shelter
Conduct arts and crafts activities or sporting games! Join the children living at the Greentree Shelter in playtime while parents attend life-skills classes. The shelter in Bethesda provides a range of social services for families making the transition from homelessness. Located in MD. Not metro accessible. Must be 18 to participate.
Capital Area Food Bank - Food Distribution at Langley Park Community Center
Volunteers needed to help Capital Area Food Bank unpack and distribute food to over 200 families. Spanish speakers needed. Located in Hyattsvile, MD.
Groundwork Anacostia River - Bandalong Litter Trap
The Bandalong Litter Trap is designed to float in waterways in order to capture litter before it flows downstream into the Anacostia River by using the current to guide debris into the trap. Continuously operating 365 days a year without any mechanical assistance to capture floating litter, the Bandalong is a proven cost effective solution to a growing litter problem. The first built in North America, the litter trap was installed by Stormwater Systems as part of a grant funded by the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) in collaboration with the Anacostia Riverkeeper and Groundwork Anacostia River DC (GWARDC). Groundwork Anacostia maintains this litter trap weekly. Tons of trash and debris is stopped before reaching the Anacosta River. Part of the process includes separating the recyclables from other debris after it is removed. The plan is to have the river swimmable and fishable by 2025. The river has already shown improvements. Volunteers are needed to help with removing/sorting debris and litter from the Bandalong Litter Trap, the first of it's kind trap designed to float in waterways in order to capture litter before it flows downstream into the Anacostia River. Located in DC. Metro accessible.
Arlington Street People's Assistance Network (A-SPAN): Emergency Winter Shelter Program
Emergency Winter Shelter Program (EWS) needs volunteers to help the shelter staff serve dinner, distribute bedding and toiletries and monitor other shelter activities. Metro accessible: Court House metro stop on Orange line in Arlington, VA. Must be 18 or older for EWS Program. 4 volunteers max. Dress is casual, in layers. Sign in at front desk upon arrival and wear volunteer badge during shift.
